Australian swim star Ian Thorpe has signed an exclusive contract with Foxtel that will include hosting his own prime time television series.

The 22-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the pay television network that will include a series on its most popular channel, Fox 8.

The Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medallist's four-year deal with the Seven Network is due to expire in June.

Thorpe said he chose to sign with Foxtel because of the flexibility it offered.

"I am excited to join the team at Foxtel and to further develop my television career. Foxtel will give me the spectrum and the flexibility to be able to do things and develop skills in a truly unique creative environment," he said.
